The Intern Teacher Program provides volunteer teaching assistants to serve as models of language and culture in US schools at all levels, from preschool through university. Interns can be assigned to a school for up to 12 months. Interns assist in the classroom for up to 25 hours per week, take Personal Study Classes and live with American Host Families. Interns are here to bring their languages and cultures to life, to engage and motivate students and leave them with new confidence in their ability to communicate across borders.. Our final goal is that Interns return home and share what they have learned and experienced with their own communities

Requirements:

  • Must be 20 years of age or older
  • Career goal in education
  • Currently enrolled in/completed higher education no more than 12 months ago
  • Native speaker of Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish
  • Proof of sufficient funds to pay 70$/month for health insurance and $150/month for personal expenses.

Job Description:

The following items should pertain to each Intern Teacher's assignment:

  • Intern is provided with a Supervising Teacher to act as a mentor
  • Intern will play a flexible role, commonly including:

 

  • Assisting the teacher in the classroom/co-teaching
  • Providing conversation practice with groups/individuals
  • Giving cultural presentations
  • Modeling pronunciation
  • Participating in extracurricular activities related to language/culture
  • Developing materials for language practice
  • Intern may teach independently if mutually agreed upon by the Host School, Intern and Amity Institute during the invitation process
  • Intern must be compensated at the standard rate for additional hours (up to a maximum of 10 hours per week)

Personal Study Classes:

While Interns are here they must take one or two Personal Study Classes, depending on assignment length. One class must address a topic in American Studies. These classes are mandatory, but must not interfere with the teaching schedule.
